This one day course for people who are already Teaching Assistants helps students to take an important step into teaching.
Certified by the Institute for Advanced Integrated Martial Arts, taught by leading Fellows with extensive teaching experience, the course is aimed at people who want to make the next step on their Instructor journey, becoming an integral part of the running of classes. Successful completion of the course leads to a certificate from the Institute.
Here are some things to understand about the course.
An Assisant Instructor is a part of the teaching team, helping to run classes together with the Instructor. An Assistant Instructor plays a regular part in helping with the teaching, and may themselves lead parts of the class, under supervision.
You must have the support of your Instructor to take part. If you have not received an invitation make sure to talk to your Instructor before booking your place.
The course is open to people from all our arts, as long as they have been training for at least two years, are already a Teaching Assistant (or come to us with equivalent qualifications), and are over 14 (or 12 if you are a Junior Black Belt). So, just as on your Teaching Assistant course, expect to meet and work with people who don't do what you do and are not the same age as you are. In past courses, the age range has been from 12 to 79!
Much of the course is practical, with you learning about how to take responsibility in a practical way. There is some theory to be done, and a porfolio to complete as you go along, plus a written or video piece to complete after the course, but the emphasis is on doing. You will work on topics and scenarios all taken from real situations in real classes. Expect to be challenged, but expect to become confident in your role.
It is not compulsory to become an Assistant Instructor, so it's up to you. However, if you are thinking about maybe teaching one day you have to pass through this important stage. It gives you the grounding to gain real teaching experience which will not only help you on your way, but will help others, too. Note that if you do TaeKwonDo or Ensodo with us you will have to complete this course if you want to be a Black Belt.
What to wear? As it is mostly practical, wear what you would wear to class. If you have any other questions, please contact us using the link below or speak to your Instructor.
To help as many people as possible take part, despite the fact that it leads to an important qualification, the course is heavily subsidised by LCTKD, but we can't afford to provide it all for free, so there is a small fee to pay if you want to take part, and you need to pay that here to book your place. (There's a money's real tight option for anyone who needs that.)
